These frequently asked questions will help residents understand when to call the highway department for various problems around Town including clogged storm drains, overgrown brush, downed mailboxes etc.

THE PLOW HIT MY MAILBOX!
The Town of Derry has a policy with regard to mailboxes, light poles, fences and other private structures.  Any structures within eight (8) feet of the edge of pavement are put there at the owner's risk.  The Town will not replace these items. A measured diagram is available from the Public Works office for a mailbox similar to the one shown above.  This mailbox is suspended from chains to allow it to swing out of the way.  

THE PLOW HAS JUST COME BY AND PLOWED ME IN..  I JUST FINISHED SHOVELING!
It is a fact that when a plow pushes snow it creates a windrow at the edge of its path.   The Town has a responsibility of maintaining over 160 miles of Town roadways.   A significant portion of the Department's overall efforts are directed towards maintaining essential transportation services and it impossible for the town to retrace its steps and clear these windrows.
CAN YOU CLEAR THE SIDEWALK, THE KIDS HAVE TO GET TO SCHOOL?  
The Town with the aid of its two sidewalk plows makes every effort to have the sidewalks plowed in a timely manner.  If a sidewalk is blocked or too slippery to be walked upon safely please contact us and we will make every effort to make them passable.
THE ROADS ARE SLIPPERY
If the Town is in the midst of a winter storm  chances are the Town sanders and/or plows are already on the roads and will get to your street shortly.  If it is simply an icy morning please call the Public Works office.
WHERE CAN I GET SAND FOR MY WALKWAY?
The Town provides sand at the Town's Transfer Station  for public use.   Transfer Station hours are Tuesday through Saturday 7:30 am - 3:30 pm.  Residents are asked to please limit themselves to 2 five-gallon pails per visit.    Salt is not supplied to residents if there is a danger that residents may be hit by equipment in the yard.
THERE ARE OVERGROWN BUSHES AT AN INTERSECTION AND I CAN'T SEE ONCOMING TRAFFIC
Every year the Town makes every effort to trim bushes and trees that block visibility along the Town's many roadways.  If by chance you notice an intersection with poor visibility please call the Public Works office.
THERE IS A DEAD TREE OR LIMB WHICH LOOKS LIKE IT WILL FALL INTO THE ROAD
This is a job for the Tree Warden.  The Town's Tree Warden is Alan R. Cote, Superintendent of Operations.   You may reach him at 432-6144.  However if the tree has already fallen and is in the road please call Public Works immediately between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If after 4:00 p.m. please contact the Police Department. If the tree has fallen onto wires or is tangled in wires please call PSNH at 1-800-662-7664.
THERE IS DEBRIS IN THE ROAD
Please call Public Works immediately between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If after 4:00 p.m. please contact the Police Department.
THE STORM DRAIN IS CLOGGED- WATER IS FLOODING THE ROAD
Please call the Public Works department we will make every effort to clear the drain.   In some cases it may be necessary to wait for drier weather in order to get the machinery to the site.
STORM WATER RUNOFF FROM THE STREET RUNS INTO MY YARD AND FLOODS MY BASEMENT
If the water is coming from the road please contact the Public Works office.  We will send someone out to view the water flow patterns and determine what action should be taken if any.
THE STORM DRAIN COVER IS OFF AND SOMEONE MAY GET HURT
Please call Public Works immediately between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If after 4:00 p.m. please contact the Police Department.
A STOP SIGN IS MISSING!!!
Please call the Public Works office immediately between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If after 4:00 p.m. please contact the Police Department.
MY STREET SIGN IS MISSING
Please call the Public Works office with the location of the street sign. The Public Works office is responsible for maintaining all street signs for public roads however all street signs on private roads are the responsibility of the property owners.

HOW DO I GET A NEW SIGN PUT UP ON MY STREET
If you would like to get a sign put up on your street that has heretofore not been there you need to write a letter to the Highway Safety Committee and send it to them at 14 Manning St., Derry, NH 03038.

THE STREET LIGHT IS OUT ON MY STREET
The Public Works office does not replace street lights.  You need to call Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH) at 669-4000.
THE TRAFFIC LIGHT AT ___ INTERSECTION IS MALFUNCTIONING
Please call the Public Works office immediately between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If after 4:00 p.m. please contact the Police Department.

THERE IS  A LARGE POTHOLE
If the pothole is in the street call the Public Works office and tell them the location of the Pothole.  Driveway aprons are the responsibility of the property owner.

THERE IS A DEAD ANIMAL ON MY STREET
If the animal is dead and is on the road or shoulder please call the Public Works office.  If the animal is not yet dead please call the Animal Control Officer at 432-6143.  Dead animals on private property and not in the roadway are the responsibility of the property owner.
